The play is adapted from Yi Qian Zhong’s novel of the same name. He Weifang, a merchant’s daughter, divorces her family from a marriage where only benefits are exchanged. With her superb skills in cultivating rare peonies, she ventures into the business world and ventures into Chang’an. He Weifang relied on his business acumen to start a business with Jiang Changyang, a forbearing and dormant minister of the emperor, the “Flower and Bird Envoy”, and started a business planting flowers in the fields in the backyard of the Jiang Mansion. With the joining of Qin Wuniang, Zhu Fu, and Lu Gengchun, He Weifang led the sisters to show their talents and overcome difficulties, and jointly created the “Hua Xiangrong” brand, allowing the fragrance of peonies to float into every household in Chang’an in thousands of forms. He Weifang, who has personally experienced the hardships of people’s livelihood, redeemed her ancestral property Fang Yuan, took in women who had a bumpy fate and were confused about their future, helped them learn skills to settle down, and built Fang Yuan into a “flower country for girls”. At Jiang Changyang’s suggestion, He Weifang was determined to transform his industry and founded the “Wuyongtang” that produced oil, medicine, and grain to benefit the people. He Weifang repeatedly helped Jiang Changyang on his journey to serve the country, and the two gradually developed a secret love. After experiencing a near-death experience, the two joined hands to put down the rebellion, and both retreated into seclusion between heaven and earth.
